4a5f64fc3d w6a: bare negative constant parses honestly; name(reg) rejects
Two parse.c operand defects. A bare `-8` (no $) double-negated to
+8: a_parsenum lets strtoll consume the sign, and the caller's
`off * sign` re-applied it (the D_INDIR arm never multiplied, which
is why -8(BP) always worked); the wwstage twin was already correct,
so this was a latent cs!=ww on hand-written source. The name(REG)
non-SB arm faked a D_INDIR off an UNCHECKED reg_lookup and silently
discarded the parsed ident and +disp -- both stages; the shape has
no encoding and now rejects loud.

62b9d20383 toolchain: banner purge + WHY-only comment sweep (rule 8)
selfhost/, cmd/, internal/ join the tree-wide sweep: every section
banner dies (91 selfhost + the cmd C-style dividers -> 0); narration
and stale contracts deleted (pre-#22 bundler notes, retired
single-PT_LOAD and no-archive claims, superseded ABI tables); every
ref/harec/qbe cite, task cite, encoding/ELF contract, and rule-10
twin pointer kept; lost lifetime/rationale lines restored where the
sweep over-cut (elf_globals ownership, kwtab linear-scan). Comment-
only proven: all five wwstage tool binaries byte-identical across
the sweep; test-commit, test-byteid (161+1399, 0 pinned-divergent),
and test-bootstrap (fixed point + 991-995 byte-id) all exit 0.
The read-through banked 66 latent-bug leads (checkpoint).

64d6c15e41 w6a: raise symbol-name buffer cap 64->256 (M1 prep)
Dotted import paths lengthen mangled symbols; the assembler's
fixed symbol/TEXT/DATA name buffers must not silently truncate a
mangled name into a collision. Byte-id-neutral: no current symbol
reaches 63 chars. wwstage w6a already parses symbols via dynamic
dupstr, so no mirror cap exists there.

13441c5e2e w6a, wcc: add A_SARQ for signed arithmetic right-shift (#136)
Add SAR/SARQ to both assemblers' opcode tables (cstage cmd/w6a +
wwstage selfhost/cmd/w6a) — REX.W + D3 /7, parallel to SHR's D3 /5.
Encoding is the unary-on-CL form (SAR r/m64, CL), the only variant
the cgen emits today. cstage cgen + wwstage cgen sweep all 12 SHRQ
emission sites (6 per stage) so signed RSHIFT and signed RSHIFTEQ
route through SARQ (arithmetic, sign-extends MSB) instead of SHRQ
(logical, zero-fill). Pre-fix `let i: i32 = -200; i >>= 2;`
produced 0x3FFFFFCE (1073741774) instead of -50; cs==ww held because
BOTH stages emitted SHRQ, so the 990-997 byte-id gates were
gate-blind to this silent miscompile.

Sites covered (per stage 6, same shape in both):
  - plain TK_RSHIFT (cgbin / N_BIN ordered binop) — derives unsignd
from operand types via type_isunsigned / nodeisunsigned, picks
    SHRQ vs SARQ at emit
  - chained-ptr-field compound RSHIFTEQ (cgen.c:3281-3317 area)
  - N_INDEX-lhs compound RSHIFTEQ (#133-expanded N_INDEX site)
  - deref-target compound RSHIFTEQ
  - top-level let compound RSHIFTEQ
  - IDENT-local compound RSHIFTEQ
All sites reuse the in-scope unsignd variable from the surrounding
SLASHEQ block (or derive one locally when not available). LSHIFTEQ
unchanged — SHL == SAL at the encoder, no signedness dispatch needed.

912_sar_shr_run: 5 rows. i32_neg_rshifteq (lead's repro, was wrong
1073741774 → now -50), i64_neg_rshifteq (wider type), i32_pos_
rshifteq (positive control, SARQ ≡ SHRQ on positives, no regression),
u32_rshifteq (unsigned control, still SHRQ), i32_neg_rshift_binop
(plain >> not compound, cgbin TK_RSHIFT site). Exit codes use small
absolute values with u8 wrap (-50 = 206) per Unix 8-bit exit.

Bootstrap-NEUTRAL — `grep -rE '>>=|>>\b'` in lib/+selfhost/ (excl.
combined.ww) returned zero callers of signed RSHIFT today; the only
asm shifts are on previously-broken paths. 990-997 + combined_ww_
fresh stay green. Closes the silent-misbehavior class on signed
right-shift across all 12 cgen emission paths in one fold per
rule-11. Foundation for Eisel-Lemire (strconv fold-4) big-int signed
shifts.

fa136d0b88 cgen: f64 compare consults parity flag for NaN, 4 relops (both stages, #97)
UCOMISD/UCOMISS set PF=ZF=CF=1 on unordered (a NaN operand). The old
arms keyed on ZF/CF only, so 4 of the 6 relops mishandled NaN:
`nan != nan` was false (JNE keys on ZF=0), `nan == nan` was true, and
`<`/`<=` (JB/JBE) fired on the unordered CF=1. IEEE-754: any relop
with a NaN operand is unordered — `!=` true, the rest false. `!=` now
jumps to true on JNE OR JP; `==`/`<`/`<=` jump to false on JP before
the ordered Jcc.

`>`/`>=` (JA/JAE) are LEFT UNCHANGED: they require CF=0, which an
unordered UCOMISD never produces, so they already reject NaN
correctly. Adding a PF guard there would only churn their .s (an extra
JP on every >/>= float compare) for no correctness gain, so their arm
stays byte-identical to the pre-#97 single template.

Bundles the cgen fix with JP-mnemonic support in both assemblers
(w6c enum/printer + w6a/w6a_ww parse+encode, 0F 8A). They can't split:
the cgen emits JP, which has no encoding without the assembler change,
so a cgen-only commit would not build. JP is the only PF-sensitive
jump on amd64 — there is no alternative instruction.

63332fef50 cstage+selfhost+test: sign-aware codegen for signed int div/mod (#16)
Shared miscompile in both stages — not a divergence. Bootstrap byte-id
passed throughout because both stages emitted the same wrong asm. Both
the C cgen (cmd/w6c/cgen.c TK_SLASH/TK_PERCENT) and the ww cgen
(selfhost/cmd/wcc/cgenexpr.ww) prepped IDIVQ with `MOVQ $0, DX`, which
is the unsigned 128-bit dividend shape. For a negative RAX, the CPU
then divides 2^64 + (-RAX) by the divisor — unsigned wraparound, not
signed division. Surfaced via lib/time/add() needing the verbatim Hare
signed-%-normalisation in ref/hare/time/arithm.ha.

Fix: emit CQO (sign-extend RAX into RDX:RAX, REX.W 99) on the signed
arm; keep MOVQ $0, DX on the unsigned arm where the DIVQ-vs-IDIVQ
dispatch was already correct. Since both stages always emit 64-bit
IDIVQ regardless of source width, a single CQO suffices for
i64/i32/i16/i8 — the dividend already lives in RAX sign-extended. No
CDQ/CWTL/CBTW needed.

Symmetric stages (rule 10): both stages were broken identically; both
get the same surgical fix. Adds A_CQO to each assembler's opcode set:
cstage in cmd/w6c/6.out.h + cmd/w6c/txt.c + cmd/w6a/{parse,asm}.c;
wwstage in selfhost/cmd/w6a/{types,parse,asm}.ww.

Class B (shared miscompile) — new in the session's polarity catalog.
Bootstrap byte-id is useless for catching it; semantic 9xx runtime
tests are the right shape. test/wcc/978_intdiv_signed.c covers 27 rows
× 2 drivers = 54 fixtures across {i8,i16,i32,i64,u8,u16,u32,u64} ×
{/, %} with width-boundary minima (INT8_MIN, INT16_MIN, INT32_MIN,
INT64_MIN/2) and high-bit-set unsigned anchors. INT64_MIN is spelled
(-INT64_MAX) - 1 per task #17 (wwstage NEGQ-over-imm drops digits on
-9223372036854775808i64); that literal-cgen bug is unrelated to this
fix.

Two known compound-assign workarounds at cmd/w6c/cgen.c:3765
(TK_SLASHEQ IDENT-local) and :3549 (TK_SLASHEQ/TK_PERCENTEQ
deref-compound) remain in tree; both depend on the assembler having
CQO, so they revert in a follow-up commit citing this one.

cbcc0167ae w6c+w6a+selfhost+lib: cgen+asm bugs surfaced by hash modules
Seven fixes across the toolchain, plus three new lib/hash modules
(adler32, crc16, crc32) that surfaced them.

  1. `~x` on u8/u16/u32 left the upper bits set: NOTQ inverts the
whole 64-bit register and nothing trimmed it back to type
width, so a returned `u16` would compare 64-bit against a
typed literal and disagree. Both stages now mask after NOTQ
for narrow unsigned: AND $0xFF/0xFFFF for u8/u16, MOVL r,r for
     u32 (ANDQ $0xFFFFFFFF sign-extends imm32 and is a no-op).
Signed narrows stay sign-extended and need no fix-up. See
     cmd/w6c/cgen.c N_UN TK_TILDE and selfhost cgenexpr.ww cgun
     TK_TILDE with new nodeprimwidth helper.

  2. w6a had no D_CONST immediate path for ANDQ / ORQ. cgen would
emit `ANDQ $65535, AX` and the rr encoder silently wrote
`21 /r` with garbage reg fields — the mask never happened.
     Added `81 /4` (AND) and `81 /1` (OR) imm32 paths in both
cstage and selfhost w6a. The ~width fix above depends on this.

  3. `s: []u8` cast as a direct fn argument produced a 0-length
slice. cgexpr for N_CAST left (AX=ptr, BX=len) from the str
source but never set CX (cap), and the arg-push fallback only
pushed AX. cgcast now synthesises CX=BX when target is slice
and source is str; node_isslice / arg-push recognise
cast-to-slice and emit the full (cap, len, ptr) triple. Both
     stages.

  4. `*[N]T` element-store used 8-byte stride + MOVQ regardless of
T's width. Indexing `buf: *[4]u16` would step 8 bytes and
     write 8 bytes per element. Added idx_eff (drills *[N]T → T)
in cstage and the matching pointer-array drill in selfhost
elemsizeof. Also added MOVW / MOVZWQ / MOVSWQ to w6c, w6a,
and selfhost mirrors so 2-byte element stores/loads use the
right opcode (was falling through to MOVQ and trailing 6 bytes
     into the next slot).

  5. Slicing a top-level fixed array (`g[0:n]` where `g: [N]T` is
a global) computed the base from BP instead of the symbol —
localfind returned 0 and the cgen treated it as a local at
     offset 0. Both N_SLICE-as-expression (cgslice) and N_SLICE-
as-call-arg paths now check let_islet / letvartnode and emit
LEAQ name(SB) when the base is a global array (or MOVQ
name(SB) for a global slice/pointer base). Both stages.

  6. Top-level `let arr: [N]T = [v0, v1, ...]` link-failed on
cstage — emit_lets bailed when it saw N_ARRLIT init on an
array type, and the sz==8 scalar path then misemitted any
     8-byte-sized array (e.g. [4]u16, [8]u8) as a single quad.
emit_lets now walks N_ARRLIT, evaluates each element as an
     int/rune/bool/nil literal, packs per-element bytes
little-endian, and honours the trailing `...` repeat marker.
Selfhost already handled the literal-init path; fixed the
parallel sz==8 duplicate-DATAW emit on its side (the array
and the scalar paths both fired, last write winning at link
but the duplicate broke cross-stage byte-identicality on user
     code with this shape).

  7. w6a's per-line input buffer was a 1KB stack `char buf[1024]`.
     A `DATAW` for a [256]u16 emits ~2080 bytes on one line, which
truncated mid-escape; the assembler then re-parsed the
remaining tail as garbage opcodes ("unknown opcode"). Bumped
cstage w6a to a 32K static buffer (selfhost w6a already
     allocated per-line via amalloc).

  lib: lib/hash/adler32, lib/hash/crc16, lib/hash/crc32 — pure
  buffer-subset shape (matching lib/hash/fnv), with per-module
  *_test.ww runnable via `ww test lib/hash/<name>`. Adler-32 plus
  CRC-16 (CCITT/CMDA2000/DECT/ANSI) and CRC-32 (IEEE/Castagnoli/
Koopman) cover Hare's reference vectors bit-for-bit. Wired into
  test/wcc/900_stdlib.c. .gitignore: lib/**/*.s,*.o so `ww test`
  droppings stay untracked.

`make test` (26/26), `make bootstrap` (ww2≡ww3≡ww4), and per-module
`ww test` all pass. cgen output is byte-identical across cstage and
selfhost for every repro that previously diverged.

d998425391 w6a+w6l: DATAR directive for absolute-address relocs in .data
Unblock literal initialisers for str/slice/struct globals by wiring
an R_X86_64_64 relocation kind through both assembler and static
linker.

w6a:
  - new A_DATAR directive, syntax `DATAR slot+off(SB),target(SB)`,
records an R_X86_64_64 reloc at slot+off in .data pointing at
    target. The slot must be pre-defined by a prior DATAW;
  - parse_operand learned the `name+disp(SB)` shape so the slot's
    byte offset can be addressed explicitly;
  - Areloc carries a `section` flag (0=.text / 1=.data) and obj.c
splits the reloc list into .rela.text and .rela.data, emitting
the latter conditionally with sh_info pointing at .data.

w6l:
  - Lrel grows the same `section` flag; obj.c loads `.rela.data`
sections into the global reloc list with offsets shifted by
    each input's data_off;
  - pass.c handles R_X86_64_64: target VA is data_va+sym.val for
in_data symbols (else text_va+sym.val), addend is added, and
the 8-byte slot is patched in l->data (or l->text).

Inputs without DATAR are unaffected — bootstrap, 991 (selfhost .o
diff) and 992 (selfhost exe diff) keep their byte-identical
output. 520_datar covers the new path: asm a DATAW+DATAR pair,
verify .rela.data has exactly one R_X86_64_64 entry, link, run,
confirm the relocated pointer feeds a 5-byte write that prints
"hello".

Selfhost mirror + w6c emission for str/slice/struct literal init
land in follow-ups.

1b0955c97b w6a: DATAW directive for writable .data section
First step toward top-level mutable `let`. Adds a sibling directive to
DATA whose bytes land in a separate writable .data PROGBITS section
(SHF_ALLOC|SHF_WRITE, STT_OBJECT) instead of .text. The section is
emitted only when DATAW was used, so inputs without it produce a
byte-identical .o — tests 991 (selfhost .o diff) and 995 (self-rebuild)
keep passing unchanged.

w6l still treats data-resident syms as undefined; that's the next step.

2c33228b7e ww: rename toolchain to w-prefix + hare-style build/run/test driver
Plan 9-style w-prefix on the per-arch tools, disambiguating from the
real Plan 9 6c/6a/6l in ref/plan9front/:

    cmd/wwc/ → cmd/wcc/ libwwc.a → libwcc.a
    cmd/6{c,a,l} → cmd/w6{c,a,l} binary names too
    test/wwc/ → test/wcc/ 6 test files w/ w6 prefix
    selfhost/cmd mirror in lockstep
    bootstrap/amd64/{w6c,w6a,w6l} snapshot binaries (gitignored)
    WW_6{C,A,L} → WW_W6{C,A,L} env-var overrides

Plan 9 source-tree refs ("Plan 9 6c shape", ref/plan9front/, etc.)
preserved. Hare-style driver, both C and ww sides:

ww test [path] discover *_test.ww in a directory module, run
                     each; single-file mode for `ww test foo.ww`
    Module-by-name `ww build foo` resolves to foo.ww or foo/foo.ww
                     via search path (cwd : -I dirs : $WW_LIB)
    Default-to-cwd `ww build` / `ww test` build the cwd module
Run pass-through `ww run path arg1 arg2` reaches the program

lib/os: getcwd (79) and getdents64 (217) syscalls power `.` resolution
and directory enumeration on the ww side.

Makefile: wwstage tool deps now include lib/os/os.ww (+ lib/strconv
for wwdump_ww) so lib/* edits force their rebuild instead of leaving
stale binaries — surfaced when test 995 first failed against a stale
w6c_ww built before the lib/os additions.

Test 993 byte-identical parity gate (C-side ww vs ww-side ww_ww on a
build corpus) stays green; all 19 tests pass.
