The wwstage nodeisstr/nodeisslice recognizers were name-keyed for
every non-local shape: an indirect fn-pointer callee ((*f)() — the
errnotest #59.5 divergence, streq receiving a shifted register file)
and module-global let/const idents (path.sepstr — union-widen pushes
zero-filled len/cap) both fell to false while cstage keys off the
checker stamp unconditionally. Both recognizers now fall back to the
stamped n.type_; push and pop sites share them, so the drain stays
balanced by construction. Graduates the #59.5 errnotest pin.
Wwstage-driver-leg byte identity gets one owner. The three carriers'
content identity is already blanket-owned by their r815_/r940_/r951_
corpus twins via test-data-byteid; their only non-redundant assertion
was the ww_ww driver leg, which 989_lib_byteid's 43-unit sweep covers
apart from the zero-dep root-only edge — folded in as a new probe row
(44 units). r940 fixture comments re-cited off the retired carrier.
pushargsrev's N_SLICE arm resolved esz and the base address from the
stamped tinfo of an N_DOT [N]T-field base but let the omitted hi bound
fall to $0, so the #258 array-to-slice borrow desugar handed callees a
zero-length slice: base64 clear()'s bytes.zero(e.ibuf) was a runtime
no-op under the wwstage frontend. Take the element count from the
field's array tinfo like the cgslice #252 arm and cstage's bu->alen.
Graduates r989_libprecond_decodedsize_aligned and the 989_lib_byteid
#59.3 base64 pin.
Every surviving carrier now owns its artifacts: checked mkdir/mkdtemp/
fopen acquisition, one all-exit cleanup funnel per carrier, ENOENT-
tolerant checked unlinks, exact-path deletion (rm -rf only for an
owned pid-keyed dir or a .sepwork beneath one), and cleanup failure
fails a passing carrier without overwriting its diagnostic. In the
same pass the carriers adapt to the driver contract this branch lands:
--sep and WW_PKGCACHE are gone, -S and the /tmp/ww_run_<pid> scratch
contract are asserted, and rows whose runtime or reject coverage moved
to test/wcc/data fixtures or test/lang @test owners are trimmed to the
byte/artifact/diagnostic observations only they can make.
Repair and adaptation ride together because most files interleave both
in the same hunks; splitting would manufacture intermediate carrier
states that never existed and cannot run against either driver.
build_one_sep (per-package compile + .wwi interfaces + link) becomes the
sole build path. do_build/do_run/do_test and the ww twins all route
through it; --sep is now an accepted no-op and the run-rejects-sep guard
is removed.
Deleted the single-file amalgamator, both stages: build_one, expand,
expand_dir, peek_package (+ the wwstage twins + strictpkgmismatch).
unit_has_package is retained -- the sep scan loop's inline-package check
needs it. The sep-shared helpers (enumerate_dir_ww, locate_import*,
import_path_form, ImportSet, and ww counterparts) stay; they back the
surviving sep path.
Restores missing-package enforcement under sep by construction: the sep
scan loop loudly rejects an unresolvable import (cannot find package
<name>) unless the package is defined inline in the same unit -- matching
the deleted amalgamator and closing the silent-accept the flip would
otherwise introduce.
All 5 wwstage tools relink (each is built via the now-sep `ww build`);
emitted asm is byte-identical to the combined build per bootstrap input,
so the binary md5 delta is pure link layout, not codegen.
selfhost/cmd/ww/main.combined.ww is now stale and unregenerable (its
writer build_one is deleted); #90 deletes it next.
Test retargets folded in (rule-11 carve-out, #61/#133 precedent): each
asserts post-flip-only behavior, is un-pre-migratable unlike #93/#94/#103,
and splitting reddens one side. Closes#97.
- 989_slttypepref -> dir-package layout (xb imports xa so both same-leaf
`invalid` types are in scope at xb.f); inline-multipackage was the
amalgamator shape, deleted with the flip.
- 989_sepbuild_run -> run --sep now genuinely runs (exit 7), not the old
loud-reject (exit 2); + a private per-pid WW_PKGCACHE so the cs/ww
per-package byte-id compare on the shared real lib pkgs (rt/time/os) no
longer races concurrent siblings on the global out/.pkgcache (the flip
made sep the sole path, so every test now contends that cache).
- 737_direnum -> the deleted strictpkgmismatch "differs from" wording ->
sep's "does not match import path" (shared substring, wwstage terser #68).
- 989_lib_byteid -> corpus-completeness scan excludes generated .sepwork
scratch (the old `! -name '*.combined.ww'` exclude didn't cover the new
sep artifact).
94b of the C-mig2 split (own commit: lone phase-1 test-commit cache
gate). The corpus gate now drives two --sep builds (ww / ww_ww) per lib
unit and byte-diffs the concatenated per-package .sepwork/*.s. Keying on
every per-package .s — the imported lib body (e.g. log.s) and lib/test
(test.s), never collapsed to __root.s — preserves the cs!=ww lib-body
coverage the gate exists for. Tri-mode (ID/DIVERGE/WWREJECT) per module,
import-landed sentinel, and corpus_complete scan all preserved. 43/43
(net=M_ID via #102). Test-only; all 5 binary pins HOLD.
The ww compiler frontend was split across packages lex (lex+tok), ww
(ast+sym+typ), and parse — mirroring Hare's ref/hare/hare/{ast,lex,parse}.
That split's only payoff is third-party reuse, which ww has zero of: the
frontend is consumed by exactly one client, the wcc backend. The split's
cost is a wide cross-package export surface — every fn over a sibling
package's type must export it, and under separate compilation that
re-triggers check_exported_type, plus a phantom `import tok;` (tok lives
in package lex). Consolidate into ONE package lib/ww/syntax/, modelled on
Go's cmd/compile/internal/syntax. The 9 files move in (package syntax);
the intra-frontend mutual references become same-package; wcc and the
tool mains import syntax. No cstage C change (the C frontend mangles from
the source package clause). Internal data shapes (AST kinds, token model,
lexer/parser state) still mirror ref/hare/hare per rule 6/12 — only the
module decomposition collapses; the stdlib is untouched.
USER-approved (#74); spec .ai/rob-frontend-reorg.md (drew2 fidelity-
confirmed). Rule-6 carve-out documented in CLAUDE.md. Dissolves the tok
phantom import; collapses the intra-frontend export sprawl. Byte-id
rebaseline (lex.X/parse.X/ww.X -> syntax.X); cs==ww held. The residual
syntax->wcc export surface (10 types) + the unqualified-ref question are
separate follow-ups (#72/#75).
White-box @tests move into a colocated 'package regex' file (Hare
+test.ha analogue; #6 non-T drop plays the build-tag role), black-box
@tests stay in package regex_test — Go's foo/foo_test split. The
wb/ stub driver is documented-temporary scaffolding: a same-dir
importer file-resolves to regex.ww before dir-enumeration, so only a
different-dir import bundles the whitebox sibling (task #33 retires
it). CLAUDE.md rule-9 carve-out updated (#5 closed, gate was #6).
wwstage over-rejects harec's flexible-rune-const narrow (rune lit
promotes into any int whose range fits — harec check.c:1910,
types.c promote_flexible); explicit cast until that promotion lands
in ww (#29, revert to bare '\\' then). With the enum-as fix fnmatch
is byte-identical across stages: 989 #59.14 graduates
M_WWREJECT -> M_ID, transferring 972's cstage 8/8 behavior to the
provably-identical wwstage binary — the dark-regression gate. (#29)
lib/test/run.ww: fork+wait4 runner; each @test runs in its own child,
abort/SEGV/FPE decoded from wait-status, failures recorded and the run
continues; exit = fail count. Tests are hermetic: module globals do not
persist test-to-test (fresh fork image; sanctioned divergence from
harec's shared-process __test_main, no setjmp/signal layer needed).
-T synth (both stages) emits a module-global (str,*fn() void) table +
return run(table) instead of straight-line calls. Driver twins bundle
lib/test under test mode and gain ww test -c/-o (go test -c) so the
byte-id gates diff the same artifact the real path builds. Gates
989/910/997 rewired onto it; new 911 pins record-and-continue across
all three fault classes; 949 +3 rows. (#17-team commit-2)
Splice @test N_FNDECLs out of the unit after the body-check passes,
mirroring harec's checked-but-not-emitted: a broken @test body still
errors loudly in non-T; @test-free units are emission-unchanged.
910/997 table rows pin keep/test x non-T/-T, head+consecutive unlink,
undef-body reject, and plain-calls-dropped loud link-fail. w6c+wwdump
combined.ww regen. (#6-team)
'ww test' gains the istest build path (-T injection in build_one/
buildone) and do_test/dotest accept -I, mirroring do_run - both twins.
The 35 converted lib tests drop their interim bare mains (-T
synthesizes the entry from @test fns and rejects a user main); their
35 C run-drivers flip 'ww run' -> 'ww test'; 989_lib_byteid compiles
lib tests under -T (8 user-main probe fixtures stay non-T, gated on
the fixture field). Abort-on-first-failure stands until the deferred
record-and-continue harness lands with the multi-package arc.
typeeqast's N_TNAME arm compared variant types by SURFACE string
(streq(aa.str, bb.str)), so a cross-module type referenced bare
(oserror) vs qualified (os.oserror) mis-compared unequal -> A6:
concrete->tagged silently mis-identified the variant. Resolve each
name to its canonical type sym before comparing: keep the streq
fast-path, else aliassym(c,aa)==aliassym(c,bb) (ww's existing resolver
maps bare [#53] and qualified [#51] to the same SK_TYPE sym). AST
analog of cstage type.c:278 TY_NAMED a==b / harec types.c:579
ident_equal -- NO interning. `c` threaded into 21 typeeqast sites.
B-full Layer 1: closes A6/#14; Layer 2 (A7 tagged->tagged subset
reject) stays deferred to the #199b flatten arc. Byte-id-neutral;
graduates shlex #59.15 (989 M_WWREJECT->M_ID). test/wcc/839 pins
both-stage symmetry (discriminating teeth = 989 #59.15, per 839 doc).
wwstage compiled str ==/!= as a single CMPQ on the eager-eval'd ptr word
(len ignored), so two distinct-pointer equal-content strings compared
unequal. cstage was already correct (CALLs rt_streq, the #154 cbinop fix).
The wwstage cgbin had no str-awareness -- every comparison fell to the
generic CMPQ tail; the #154 fix was never mirrored.
wwstage-only: a cgstreqpush helper + a str ==/!= branch at the top of
cgbin (before the generic eval collapses the header), byte-matching cstage
cbinop:4564-4623 -- push rhs/lhs (len,ptr), POPQ DI/SI/DX/CX, CALL
rt_streq, XORQ $1 for !=. Gated on typeisstr (= cstage node_isstr, which
also catches module-global str idents). cstage cgen unchanged (w6c md5
unchanged). The str== .s is byte-identical cs==ww for local, global,
aliased, chained, and condition operands.
Graduates 3 lib byte-id pins (test/wcc/989_lib_byteid #59.1 asciitest,
#59.11 toktest, #59.12 asttest) M_DIVERGE->M_ID -- they used == on str and
were pinned divergent because of this bug; now byte-identical. byte-id
990-997 8/8. test/wcc/827 table-driven.
Faithful realignment of lib/path to Hare's buffer-centric API
(ref/hare/path/{stack,buffer}.ha). Replaces the old str-only path.ww
wholesale (zero consumers). Scope = stack-core: init() deferred (returns
~4KB (buffer|error), rides the #40 arc / #147); abs/dirname/basename land
in c3; extension/join dropped.
appendlit uses the #145 slice-copy-assign arm (buf.buf[lo:hi]=bs), no hand
loop. dot/dotdot are faithful module-global []u8 (D2 #148). MAX =
os.PATH_MAX-1. Divergences (size->i32 indices, frombytes, module-global
consts) cited inline.
Tests: lib/path/pathtest.ww (table-driven), wired at test/wcc/989_path_run.c;
push rows mirror stack.ha:107-111 verbatim incl the restored "/d"
intermediate. Slot 989 (overflow bucket) since 970 is taken.
C-first: cstage @test green; wwstage byte-id deferred to the #125 batch.
path classified M_WWREJECT in 989_lib_byteid (w6c_ww rejects the module-
global slice consts = #120/#29; + the #148 twin #151) — self-graduates back
to M_ID the day wwstage accepts. path moved off the 900_stdlib standalone
list (import-dependent: os.PATH_MAX def-dim + match over imported error
types; coverage at 989_path_run), per the bytes/fmt/os precedent.
Gate: all 324 passed, byte-id 990-997 green, w6c/w6c_ww unchanged
(lib-only, non-embedded).
io.empty (discard+EOF stream, ref/hare/io/empty.ha:4-17) — needed by getopt's
two-pass printusage width measurement. Diverges from Hare's `const empty: *stream`:
a `let _empty_vt` + `fn empty()` that wires the fn-ptr slots per call, because
const-init of a vtable struct with fn-ptr fields is blocked (#118, ruled accept).
Co-discovered while making empty() byte-identical across stages: three
wwstage-only cgen fixes (cstage was already correct; wwstage aligned down):
- #129 sretretsize: consult the same-module pointer-alias before structlookup's
any-module struct fallback (io.stream = *vtable was mis-sized as memio's 56B
struct -> spurious sret save).
- #129 callsretsize: swap curmod to the callee's module before sret-size
classification (cross-module callee context).
- #130 cgassign global-struct tagged-union field store: add the missing arm
(was a 1-word store) mirroring cstage cgen.c:4893-4912.
The three are inseparable from io.empty here — splitting them out leaves a
divergent-asm intermediate (993/995 red), so they ride one commit per the
one-class gate-repair carve-out (#133-expanded precedent). Regenerates the
embedded combined.ww; 989_lib_byteid pins bufio + fmt graduated to M_ID.
(cgenexpr.ww fix-3 inline comment cites the #129 cluster; narrow to #130 on
next touch to avoid a regen for a comment.)
slot = roundup8(size(elem)) — 8B is a FLOOR, not a ceiling (user-
ratified 2026-06-04; the #237 fieldslotsize precedent; (str,str)=48B
predates this — tagged was the one truncated >8B kind). Pre-fix the
checkers truncated a tagged element to one 8B slot and every cgen
transport walk strode wide=(STR||SLICE)-else-8: cstage read the
NEIGHBOR slot, wwstage read ZEROS — both-wrong-differently, so the
byte-id gates were blind (prober-9 PG1, /tmp/p9).
One stride accessor per stage — tuple_eslot (cgen.c) / tupeslot
(cgenstmt.ww) — now feeds every tuple walk; the per-site predicates
are deleted as absorbed. Sizer: check.c N_TTUPLE + check.ww
tupleelemslot gain the TY_TAGGED arm (astsize already rides the type
table since commit 0). Routes flipped to the accessor, both stages
symmetric: cursor producers (lit/slot-to-cursor; tagged ident
elements load their box from the slot — cgexpr's tagged ident load
is word0-only), let-receive (tuple_store/tupstore generalized to
eslot/8 words), N_RETURN send, by-value param receive, arg
restage/drain (tagged stays loud per C-t2), destructure
(MLET/MASSIGN, ident + sret + in-cap), t.N read + len(t.N) +
global-g.N offset walks (t.N gains the tagged box load: AX=tag,
DX/CX/R8=payload — the is/as spill cursor), sret classifier, DATA
emit. wwstage cgtagvariantidx gains the #67 stamped-carrier arm
(flatvariantidxt on .type_) — its AST-only key silently clamped
't.0 is size' to tag 0; fused here because the tuple-element read
this commit wires is its only exercisable consumer.
Exit invariant: zero silent tagged-tuple paths — in-cap shapes
(<=4 GP eightbytes) are correct end-to-end; everything else is LOUD:
over-cap sret return (#22b, task #28), call-arg (C-t2 #32),
non-local literal element sources (#22b/#23), tuple-in-union payload
(#242/#22b), global static-init, element write (pre-existing).
Closure proof-grep at HEAD: 'tuple_ebytes|tupebytes' -> 0 hits;
'wide.*=.*(TY_SLICE|TY_STR)' tuple-walk survivors are all behind
tagged loud-guards (cgen.c:2535/2568/12013 widen-store + over-cap
send; cgenutil.ww:3527 twin).
Latent cross-checks closed by the accessor: wwstage MLET-sret strode
esz (4 for i32) vs cstage 8; wwstage param-receive strode slotsize
(composite slotsize) vs cstage 8; both now the accessor's floor-8.
Tagged inits in pins use the CAST form (5: size) — the bare
untyped-int widen-store mis-tag is pre-existing at master and filed
(task #33).
941 gains 13 rows: t22_* size/align folds (+ void-elem 0-slot pin),
the full runtime round-trip (read, is/as, both element orders, void
variant, destructure, literal-let), two-tagged-elem in-cap and
float+tagged in BOTH orders (ken k1/k2 regression-pinned as rows),
t.N-as-call-arg, 5 loud pins (arg, over-cap return, call-source
element, global init, element write), and the sret_narrow_mix_*
triple below. Runtime rows exit-checked under both drivers +
byte-id. 129/129; unit tests green; sizelint clean.
ken R1 (re-validation fix): an OVER-CAP tuple init whose rhs is not a
CALL fell past every cstage N_LET store arm to NOTHING — silent
uninitialized-frame reads — while wwstage loud-rejected the same
shape. Pre-existing for (str,str) literals; the #22a tagged slots
routed >16B-box tagged shapes into it (k5b/k5c/k5d, base-correct
because base truncated them in-cap). cstage now routes the rhs
through cgexpr (the cursor materialisers carry the exact wwstage
loud texts) with a trailing fatal as the net; 941 pins both the
tagged and the (str,str) spellings of the hole.
reviewer-22 (review fixes, folded): the MLET-receive slot flip above
landed ALONE on the wwstage over-cap sret family — the ww RETURN-send
and MASSIGN-receive still strode packed esz (4 for u32), so
`let (a,b,c) = f()` over (str,u32,str) read c at slot offset 32 while
ww's send wrote it packed at 28: a ww runtime REGRESSION vs base
(base was packed-consistent on both sides — ran right, byte-diff).
Both walks now stride the slot (send mirrors cstage's
`wide ? esz : 8`; MASSIGN strides tupeslotn) — closing, in the same
stroke, the pre-existing base skews: ww `let t = f()` over-cap
narrow-mix read (reader slot-laid vs send packed, runtime-wrong at
base) and the cs≠ww asm on all three routings. Second find: t.N
tagged element as a CALL ARG — cstage rides its generic
node_istaggedarg cursor push, but wwstage's kind-gated aistagged
missed N_DOT and mis-routed the box into the widening branch
(taggedvariantindex -1 clamped to 0: callee read variant 0, silent,
ww-only). cgenutil.ww gains the N_DOT arm (aistagged + pushargsrev),
the #67 stamped-carrier twin of the N_INDEX (#12) arm. The N_DOT arm
was a LIVE wwstage stdlib miscompile: hextest's import graph carried
two t.N tagged-arg sites (base .s diff = exactly the clamped-tag
PUSHQ pair) — the 989 lib-byteid ratchet caught the convergence and
#59.4 graduates to M_ID (runtime-correct per 979_hex_run). Probes:
/tmp/r22. Residual filed: tagged arg from deref/cast/unwrap sources
is a word0-only read on BOTH stages (pre-existing, base-confirmed) —
generalizing wwstage's kind gate to cstage's type-keyed check rides
that task.
wwstage's parsef64 (naive i64-accumulator + pow-10 fold) diverged from
cstage's strtod: >19-digit mantissas overflowed the accumulator (sign-bit
garbage), DBL_MIN was +1 ULP, DBL_MAX -2 ULP — the #59.10 ratchet pin.
C-strtod oracle confirms cstage correctly rounded on every vector, so
wwstage aligns to it by dogfooding strconv.stof64 (correctly-rounded
decimal engine, already imported by lex.ww). Overflow literals now
reject in both stages (stof64 overflow -> errat, mirroring ERANGE).
Fix + #59.10 M_DIVERGE->M_ID graduation + pins land together per the
ratchet's designed flow (the gate trips loud demanding graduation):
oracle-pinned vectors in toktest.ww floatfold_cases (lexer-unit) and
989_floatlit_run (compiler fold: runtime bits + byte-id + overflow
reject parity). Retained subnormal accept-set asymmetry filed as task
#21, documented at the lexnum site.
Indexing through a pointer-to-array auto-derefs, so esz and the element
classification must come from the pointee array's ELEMENT (cstage
idx_eff semantics, cgen.c:1163). Two halves of one root class:
A (wwstage-only, cs!=ww, cstage runtime-correct): elemsizeofc's #270-2
nested-array block treated an N_TPTR pointee-array like a [N][M]T outer
index and returned the whole-array size — every p[i] read/write/
compound scaled by N*size(T), and the same wrong element belief reached
the store-width chooser (var-idx write emitted an N*8B aggregate copy
sourced at the 8B rhs slot: caller-frame smash, the siphash round()
corruption). Fixed via two wwstage choke-points mirroring idx_eff:
idxeffti (tinfo: NAMED peel + TY_PTR->TY_ARRAY drill; feeds elemsizeofc
and elemissignedc/elemisfloatc/elemisf32c) and idxelemtn (node: element
tnode with the same drill; feeds every cgindex/cgassign/nodeisstr/
match-scrutinee elemtn resolution).
B (BOTH stages identically wrong, byte-id-BLIND): the TK_AMP &base[i]
arm read bu->sub->size without the ptr peel (&p[3]-&a[0] = 96, not 24).
cstage now routes esz through idx_eff.
A and B are FUSED by the pre-existing routing topology, not by choice
(rule 11): wwstage's TK_AMP arm already reads its esz via elemsizeofc
(selfhost/cmd/wcc/cgenexpr.ww:4095, the #11 addr-of twin of the #10
cgindex fix), so fixing A's choke-point flips wwstage's half of B in
the same stroke. A standalone A leaves &p[i] transiently cs!=ww;
B-first is the mirror transient; carving the TK_AMP caller out of the
fixed choke-point to preserve the wrong stride for one commit would be
a deliberate known-wrong intermediate (rule-7, vetoed by rob). One
choke-point, two enrolled routes — un-fusable without a red
intermediate.
Close-by-construction proof-grep (both stages): every remaining raw
sub->size index-stride read is TY_ARRAY-gated, a slice-only builtin
(delete/insert), a checker-stamped element tinfo (indexresult already
decays *[N]T, check.ww:2277-2284), or a non-index context (tuple
slots, let-init elements). Two true residuals filed with site+symptom
instead of silently absorbed: N_SLICE through *[N]T does not decay
(LOUD type error, Hare divergence; team task #18) and non-ident
cast-expression index bases keep wwstage's 8B-default esz (pre-existing
#74-style cluster; team task #19). cstage's N_INDEX read-side
str/slice header gates also move from u->sub to esub (identical for
every non-ptr-to-array base; honest for *[N]str — pre-fix BOTH stages
were runtime-wrong there, differently).
949_ptrarr_index_run pins the class at runtime + byte-id: {1,2,4,8}B
elems, const+var idx, param/local/cast bases, read/write/compound,
neighbor guards, &p[i] pointer-difference, siphash-round mix shape.
989_lib_byteid: siphash_test graduates #59.7 DIVERGE -> ID (ratchet
tripped loud pre-update; no other #59.x pin flipped in the same run).
(*p)[i] (sub-bug C) follows separately.
The 990-997 gates byte-id only the selfhost-embedded modules; every
other lib/ module compiled cstage-only, which let regex.finish ship
cs≠ww for weeks (task #21, FC0). 989_lib_byteid compiles each lib test
fixture's resolved unit (plus import-probe stubs for the fixtureless
sort/path/endian/net/hash/fnv/crypto.math/c.libc) through both stages
and byte-compares the asm: 28 units pinned byte-identical (incl.
lib/regex), 12 known divergences + 3 wwstage front-end rejects pinned
as documented-allowed with task #59 cites — a landed fix trips the pin
and demands graduation, so the corpus can only ratchet toward ID.
Two rot-guards, both review-driven: each probe carries a sentinel that
must appear in the resolved unit (the driver silently skips an
unresolvable import, so a dropped probe would byte-id an empty main —
green while covering nothing), and a corpus-completeness scan fails
loudly on any lib/ dir not enrolled, so new modules cannot ship
uncovered.
Compile+cmp only (no driver run, no source-tree writes): phase-1
parallel-safe, ~6s.
