350bcd8913 ww: own the scratch contract, drop the package cache, add -S
Scratch acquisition is one bare mkdir that refuses a pre-existing
.sepwork; the path reaches cleanup only after acquisition succeeds.
ww build and ww test -o keep the tree for the caller; ww run and
no-output ww test build under an owned /tmp/ww_{run,test}_<pid> dir
and remove it on every result, escalating rc on cleanup failure.
The content-keyed package cache is deleted from both stages; -S stops
after per-package .s emission; --sep is gone and unknown flags are
rejected; directory ww test delegates to the wwtest coordinator; the
wwstage driver routes every subprocess through os.exec.

The wwstage Makefile recipes move off the persistent <tool>_ww.d
build-in-place shape to a per-invocation mktemp workspace: the old
recipes relied on the retired pre-wipe semantics and any rebuild
would trip the new refusal on their leftover main.sepwork.

The three 989_pkgcache_* carriers lose their subject with the cache
and go with it; the rest of the wave's carrier adaptation follows in
its own commits.

3ec944a67f selfhost/cmd/wcc/check+test: fold size(T)/align(T)/offset(e.f) at check time
Mirror cstage cmd/wcc/check.c:907-960. Three typed-builtin
intercepts that cstage already had:

- size(T) — folds to a literal integer at check time from a
  newly-introduced astsize walker over the type AST. Mirrors the
  size computation in cstage resolve_type at check.c:286-528.
- align(T) — same, via astalign.
- offset(e.f) — folds the byte offset of field f in e's struct
  type via astoffset. Peels exactly one N_TPTR for `p.field`.

seedprimitives registers the three names as SK_FN nil; exprtype's
N_CALL arm gates on a same-module shadow check (per #23 alloc
precedent) and consumes the parser-planted type-expression arg.
The fold is in-place — foldtointlit mutates N_CALL into N_INTLIT
so cgen sees a plain integer. resolvewalk's N_CALL trigger
invokes exprtype so the fold fires from non-let contexts too
(e.g. inside `if (size(T) != …)`).

selfhost/test/smoke.ww gains a probe-8 block: size/align/offset
assertions across str, primitive widths, ptrs, slices, and
two structs (`point`, `mixalign`) covering both no-padding and
i8+i64 natural-align padding cases.

Known divergences NOT in #42 scope:
- size((*T|void)) ≠ 8 on the cstage nullable-ptr fold (#13 family,
  unreachable through current grammar).
- 8B-struct bare-let zero-init wwstage skip vs cstage emit (#59).
- Same-module shadow gate added here, cstage has none — sibling
  shape to #26 (free/append/len gates).

Closes the original chain that started with the user's call to
fix the structural debt — six precondition fixes (#51, #52, #53,
#55, #56, #50) landed before this fold could safely live in the
check pass. Unblocks #43 (sweep literal 16s → size(str)) and #1
(str → 24B becomes one line).

ea76ee4aa3 cmd/wcc/check+test: don't fold (*T | !void) into nullable-ptr ABI
resolve_type for N_TTAGGED was peeling NAMED aliases to TY_VOID before
deciding the union is a nullable pointer, which caught (*T | nomem)
(nomem = !void) and routed it through cstage's ptr-in-AX shortcut.
wwstage's isnullabletype is purely AST-keyed on bare `void`, so any
alias or error-tagged void naturally fell through to the general
AX=tag, DX=word0 ABI. Rule 10 says align richer DOWN: gate the cstage
classifier on iserror==0 so only the literal (*T | void) shape still
folds to nullable-ptr. The literal void case stays intact for
700_e2e:642/661/1129.

Smoke test selfhost/test/tagged_ptr_ret.ww exercises (*u8 | nomem)
across both arms; cstage and wwstage now emit byte-identical asm
modulo the pre-existing #20 fmt.formatfield divergence.

58e6d349a2 cmd/w6c/cgen+test: skip dead TRYPROP propret on same-shape ?
Per CLAUDE.md rule 10, align cstage down to wwstage — when every
variant in a `?` propagation maps to itself, the remap loop emits
zero JMPs and the propret label is dead. Lazy-allocate it so the
label-counter ID is only consumed when at least one JMP fires.

Smoke test selfhost/test/trypromote.ww exercises same-shape
(i64|nomem)→(i64|nomem) propagation; cstage and wwstage now emit
byte-identical asm for the TRYPROP region.

cbcc0167ae w6c+w6a+selfhost+lib: cgen+asm bugs surfaced by hash modules
Seven fixes across the toolchain, plus three new lib/hash modules
(adler32, crc16, crc32) that surfaced them.

  1. `~x` on u8/u16/u32 left the upper bits set: NOTQ inverts the
     whole 64-bit register and nothing trimmed it back to type
     width, so a returned `u16` would compare 64-bit against a
     typed literal and disagree. Both stages now mask after NOTQ
     for narrow unsigned: AND $0xFF/0xFFFF for u8/u16, MOVL r,r for
     u32 (ANDQ $0xFFFFFFFF sign-extends imm32 and is a no-op).
     Signed narrows stay sign-extended and need no fix-up. See
     cmd/w6c/cgen.c N_UN TK_TILDE and selfhost cgenexpr.ww cgun
     TK_TILDE with new nodeprimwidth helper.

  2. w6a had no D_CONST immediate path for ANDQ / ORQ. cgen would
     emit `ANDQ $65535, AX` and the rr encoder silently wrote
     `21 /r` with garbage reg fields — the mask never happened.
     Added `81 /4` (AND) and `81 /1` (OR) imm32 paths in both
     cstage and selfhost w6a. The ~width fix above depends on this.

  3. `s: []u8` cast as a direct fn argument produced a 0-length
     slice. cgexpr for N_CAST left (AX=ptr, BX=len) from the str
     source but never set CX (cap), and the arg-push fallback only
     pushed AX. cgcast now synthesises CX=BX when target is slice
     and source is str; node_isslice / arg-push recognise
     cast-to-slice and emit the full (cap, len, ptr) triple. Both
     stages.

  4. `*[N]T` element-store used 8-byte stride + MOVQ regardless of
     T's width. Indexing `buf: *[4]u16` would step 8 bytes and
     write 8 bytes per element. Added idx_eff (drills *[N]T → T)
     in cstage and the matching pointer-array drill in selfhost
     elemsizeof. Also added MOVW / MOVZWQ / MOVSWQ to w6c, w6a,
     and selfhost mirrors so 2-byte element stores/loads use the
     right opcode (was falling through to MOVQ and trailing 6 bytes
     into the next slot).

  5. Slicing a top-level fixed array (`g[0:n]` where `g: [N]T` is
     a global) computed the base from BP instead of the symbol —
     localfind returned 0 and the cgen treated it as a local at
     offset 0. Both N_SLICE-as-expression (cgslice) and N_SLICE-
     as-call-arg paths now check let_islet / letvartnode and emit
     LEAQ name(SB) when the base is a global array (or MOVQ
     name(SB) for a global slice/pointer base). Both stages.

  6. Top-level `let arr: [N]T = [v0, v1, ...]` link-failed on
     cstage — emit_lets bailed when it saw N_ARRLIT init on an
     array type, and the sz==8 scalar path then misemitted any
     8-byte-sized array (e.g. [4]u16, [8]u8) as a single quad.
     emit_lets now walks N_ARRLIT, evaluates each element as an
     int/rune/bool/nil literal, packs per-element bytes
     little-endian, and honours the trailing `...` repeat marker.
     Selfhost already handled the literal-init path; fixed the
     parallel sz==8 duplicate-DATAW emit on its side (the array
     and the scalar paths both fired, last write winning at link
     but the duplicate broke cross-stage byte-identicality on user
     code with this shape).

  7. w6a's per-line input buffer was a 1KB stack `char buf[1024]`.
     A `DATAW` for a [256]u16 emits ~2080 bytes on one line, which
     truncated mid-escape; the assembler then re-parsed the
     remaining tail as garbage opcodes ("unknown opcode"). Bumped
     cstage w6a to a 32K static buffer (selfhost w6a already
     allocated per-line via amalloc).

  lib: lib/hash/adler32, lib/hash/crc16, lib/hash/crc32 — pure
  buffer-subset shape (matching lib/hash/fnv), with per-module
  *_test.ww runnable via `ww test lib/hash/<name>`. Adler-32 plus
  CRC-16 (CCITT/CMDA2000/DECT/ANSI) and CRC-32 (IEEE/Castagnoli/
  Koopman) cover Hare's reference vectors bit-for-bit. Wired into
  test/wcc/900_stdlib.c. .gitignore: lib/**/*.s,*.o so `ww test`
  droppings stay untracked.

`make test` (26/26), `make bootstrap` (ww2≡ww3≡ww4), and per-module
`ww test` all pass. cgen output is byte-identical across cstage and
selfhost for every repro that previously diverged.

ab173b095a examples: lisp — pure-ww Lisp interpreter, REPL, in-process tests
Demo program that lives entirely on lib/* and libwwrt.a — no @symbol
FFI of its own. The interpreter sits in lispcore.ww (exports for the
test driver); lisp.ww is a 3-line entry that calls lispcore.repl().

Language surface: integers, floats, symbols, strings, lists, lambdas
with closures, define / set! / if / quote / let / begin, recursion
(fact / fib / ackermann / gcd), map / filter / reduce as user code.

REPL is line-buffered: each read tries to parse one top-level form,
asks for more on "unterminated list", evaluates and prints, then
shifts consumed bytes off the front of the buffer. Lookahead-aware —
the parser primes one extra token so we shift to L.curstart, not
L.pos, otherwise the first byte of the next form gets eaten.

lisp_test.ww exec'd as a regular binary (ww test drops -I in single-
file mode); 66 probes cover arithmetic, lists, closures, recursion,
errors. test_*.lisp drive the live REPL through `make demo`.

The wwstage cgen still mis-lowers a handful of patterns at this
shape of program — top-level array indexing, global-ptr deref,
two-level field stores, f64 routing through *T, alloc(structlit{})
for f64/str fields, (slice | E) returns, xs[i].kind chains, f64
compound assigns. Each workaround is annotated at its use site;
the full taxonomy is in examples/lisp/CLAUDE.md.

9227a07f91 gitignore: lib/**/*.combined.ww; drop stray lex.combined.ww
`ww build` on a lib/ module drops a .combined.ww snapshot next
to the source. Only the bootstrap-frozen copies under
selfhost/cmd/*/main.combined.ww are intentionally tracked; the
lib/ ones are transient. lex.combined.ww slipped in via an
ad-hoc `git add lib/`.

2c33228b7e ww: rename toolchain to w-prefix + hare-style build/run/test driver
Plan 9-style w-prefix on the per-arch tools, disambiguating from the
real Plan 9 6c/6a/6l in ref/plan9front/:

    cmd/wwc/      → cmd/wcc/        libwwc.a → libwcc.a
    cmd/6{c,a,l}  → cmd/w6{c,a,l}   binary names too
    test/wwc/     → test/wcc/       6 test files w/ w6 prefix
    selfhost/cmd  mirror in lockstep
    bootstrap/amd64/{w6c,w6a,w6l}   snapshot binaries (gitignored)
    WW_6{C,A,L}   → WW_W6{C,A,L}    env-var overrides

Plan 9 source-tree refs ("Plan 9 6c shape", ref/plan9front/, etc.)
preserved. Hare-style driver, both C and ww sides:

    ww test [path]   discover *_test.ww in a directory module, run
                     each; single-file mode for `ww test foo.ww`
    Module-by-name   `ww build foo` resolves to foo.ww or foo/foo.ww
                     via search path (cwd : -I dirs : $WW_LIB)
    Default-to-cwd   `ww build` / `ww test` build the cwd module
    Run pass-through `ww run path arg1 arg2` reaches the program

lib/os: getcwd (79) and getdents64 (217) syscalls power `.` resolution
and directory enumeration on the ww side.

Makefile: wwstage tool deps now include lib/os/os.ww (+ lib/strconv
for wwdump_ww) so lib/* edits force their rebuild instead of leaving
stale binaries — surfaced when test 995 first failed against a stale
w6c_ww built before the lib/os additions.

Test 993 byte-identical parity gate (C-side ww vs ww-side ww_ww on a
build corpus) stays green; all 19 tests pass.

edfc4273f6 nocc: stage-0 bootstrap path (binaries gitignored)
Sets up the cc-free fresh-checkout flow without yet committing the
stage-0 binaries. The pieces are in place; flipping the switch is
one `git add -f` away when the compiler is judged stable.

  bootstrap/<arch>/{ww,6c,6a,6l}   stage-0 binaries (gitignored)
  bootstrap/README.md              layout + workflow

Two new targets:

  make bootstrap-snapshot   populates bootstrap/$(ARCH)/ from the
                            currently-built wwstage
  make nocc                 starts from bootstrap/$(ARCH)/, rebuilds
                            the wwstage from source, gates on
                            stage-0 == rebuilt byte-for-byte. Lands
                            in $(OUT)/nocc/ so $(OUT)/ stays
                            untouched. cc is never invoked.

The fixed-point gate has the same shape as `make bootstrap`, just
the entry point flipped: that target trusts cstage; nocc trusts
the checked-in (or local-snapshot) stage-0 binaries.

Implementation notes:

- libwwrt.a is assembled with stage-0 6a, members ordered to match
  $(RT_OBJ) so the embedded symbol table reproduces the cstage
  build byte-for-byte.
- The driver's default lib path is $self_dir/../../lib, which under
  $(NOCC_BIN) resolves to $(NOCC_OUT)/lib (libwwrt only). Each
  ww-build invocation passes -I $(CURDIR)/lib so `use os` etc.
  resolve to source.
- Stage-0 binaries are duplicated under both natural names (ww/6c/
  6a/6l) and _ww-suffixed names so the wwstage driver's
  hard-coded join_path_lit(self_dir, "6c_ww") still finds them.
  When cmd/wwc/ gets deleted at v1.0, that duplication and the
  _ww suffix in the driver both go away.

a52a32e0ba build: ignore example + probe build artifacts
examples/snake/ leaves snake.s/.o/.combined.ww and the stripped
binary alongside its Makefile after a build; selfhost/test/
probes drop .combined.ww next to each .ww. None of these are
intended bootstrap inputs.

C bootstrap (phases 0-9):

ww-side self-host (phase 10):
  selfhost/cmd/wwc — ww-cgen frontend; bootstrap fixed point.
  selfhost/cmd/6a  — assembler; byte-identical to C 6a (test 991).
  selfhost/cmd/6l  — linker w/ archive (.a) support; byte-identical
                     to C 6l (test 992).
  selfhost/cmd/ww  — driver (build/run/version); byte-identical to
                     C ww (test 993).

make test: 15/15. make bootstrap: ww2.s == ww3.s, ww2.o == ww3.o,
ww2 == ww3 byte-identical, with the full ww-tooled chain.
