192ddd4c66 ww: package-level -c -o names the single package's test artifact
The last Open-driver-work bullet. `-c -o <name>` replaces the fixed
<package>.test stem for exactly one package; the coordinator rejects a
multi-package fan-out ("cannot use -o with multiple packages", Go's
`go test -o` rule) and -o without -c is rejected at the driver
("needs -c for a package target" — a plain run executes from the temp
root, so a caller-owned name has nothing to name). Both driver stages
byte-identical wording; -S keeps its single-file-only reject.

package_test gains the contract row (naming, fixed-stem absence,
artifact runs, both rejects, both drivers); the tree-mode -o row's
pinned wording follows the contract.

e06b871ab9 ww: add -w persistent workdir builds with content-identity reuse
A -w DIR workdir replaces the fresh .sepwork scratch with a caller-owned
persistent package-artifact tree. A package is reused only when its
freshly composed unit byte-equals the committed unit and byte copies of
the compiler/assembler recorded in the dir equal the live tools — pure
content identity, no mtimes, no hashes, every decision reproducible
with cmp against plain files. Recompiles stage at .new names and commit
by rename, unit strictly last, so an interrupted build forces a
recompile and can never leave a committed unit vouching for uncommitted
artifacts; .o/.a additionally reject zero size (ELF/ar are never
empty), while .s/.wwi accept legitimate empties (FFI-only rt). A mode
stamp pins the -T/-S shape and the artifact protocol revision. Classic
scratch keeps its exact acquire/refuse/cleanup contract; run rejects
-w; dir-mode test rejects -w; both driver stages implement identical
behavior and wording.

f11f1629d9 docs: dissolve PROJECT_PLAN.md; drop retired-mechanism citations
PROJECT_PLAN.md was a historical disclaimer wrapping five still-open
T1 driver items — those move to docs/test-system-v2.md (Open driver
work); the rest is dated 2026-08-05 design history, archived in git.
Also retired-mechanism cleanup: both drivers drop the *.combined.ww
enumeration skip (the amalgamator is gone; leftover debris now fails
loudly instead of being silently accommodated), the consumer-less
m4_combined_epoch.md5 pin is deleted, and the wwi.ww/ww.h/check.ww
comments that still described combined.ww as the live path are
re-cited to the sep reality.

350bcd8913 ww: own the scratch contract, drop the package cache, add -S
Scratch acquisition is one bare mkdir that refuses a pre-existing
.sepwork; the path reaches cleanup only after acquisition succeeds.
ww build and ww test -o keep the tree for the caller; ww run and
no-output ww test build under an owned /tmp/ww_{run,test}_<pid> dir
and remove it on every result, escalating rc on cleanup failure.
The content-keyed package cache is deleted from both stages; -S stops
after per-package .s emission; --sep is gone and unknown flags are
rejected; directory ww test delegates to the wwtest coordinator; the
wwstage driver routes every subprocess through os.exec.

The wwstage Makefile recipes move off the persistent <tool>_ww.d
build-in-place shape to a per-invocation mktemp workspace: the old
recipes relied on the retired pre-wipe semantics and any rebuild
would trip the new refusal on their leftover main.sepwork.

The three 989_pkgcache_* carriers lose their subject with the cache
and go with it; the rest of the wave's carrier adaptation follows in
its own commits.

a1484aef28 pkgcache: reject 0-byte artifacts on store and lookup, self-heal torn writes (#10)
A torn producer write (e.g. disk-full mid-copy) could leave a 0-byte P.wwi or
P.o in out/.pkgcache under a self-consistent key; cache_lookup checked only
existence, so every later build HIT and served the empty artifact forever
(silent serve-wrong). Reject size==0 on both sides, symmetric across stages:
store refuses to commit a 0-byte temp before the key write, lookup treats a
0-byte cached artifact as a MISS so existing poison self-heals on re-derive.
A valid .wwi/.o is never 0 bytes, so the guard cannot misfire.

Regression: test/wcc/989_pkgcache_poison_run.c, table-driven over
{poison P.wwi | P.o | both}, non-vacuity proven by guard-neuter.

3bb381ef48 ww: clean per-pid sep-build scratch dir on run/test (#59)
ww run / ww test created /tmp/ww_{run,test}_<pid>.sepwork/ but removed only
the built binary, leaking the scratch DIR every invocation — the tmpfs filler
(98,811 entries blocked the gate twice). Add a keepscratch param to
build_one_sep: a thin wrapper rm -rfs the impl scratch at the single
choke-point when keepscratch==0 AND the path ends ".sepwork" (covers every
return, success+error; fires post-link, pre-run). do_build keeps it (the
byte-id gates read <stem>.sepwork from ww build -o); do_run/do_test clean;
do_test no-o redirects scratch into /tmp. Both stages symmetric; reuses the
existing shell rm -rf idiom (lib/os.removeall = #109). Test 989_sepscratch_run
is self-scoped by child pid (non-flaky) with a KEEP control + revert-verified
non-vacuity. Full gate: 448 pass, zero new run/test leaks. (ww_d_* relic +
historical bulk = one-time sweep + agent-probe discipline, not code.)

64cf3c4094 rm dead combined.ww + retarget 901 to sep-feed; sweep amalgamator remnants (M4 E4, #90)
The E3 flip (#87) made sep the sole compile path and deleted the
combined.ww writer, leaving the six committed *.combined.ww files dead.
Remove them and the last references to the retired amalgamator.

- rm the 6 tracked *.combined.ww (selfhost/cmd/{w6a,w6c,w6l,ww,wwdump}/
  main.combined.ww + selfhost/test/smoke.combined.ww). Verified no live
  build path or gate still feeds one as compiler INPUT.
- 901_asserttyped_gap: its 5 combined.ww gap fixtures were the last
  combined.ww INPUT consumers (4 already missing/vacuous post-flip, only
  smoke.combined.ww still fed). Retarget all 5 to sep-feed via a
  resolveunit helper (whole-package-dir copy -> `ww build --sep` ->
  <stem>.sepwork/__root.unit.ww), mirroring 990's #89 pattern; the 3
  import-free test fixtures stay raw-fed. All 8 counts hold at 0 (A-D
  coverage, vacuous since the flip, is live again).
- INV-2 (the driver's unresolvable-import-is-fatal guard) is KEPT; only
  its "Mirrors the deleted expand" lineage tail is swept. The #110
  combined_ww_fresh freshness gate was already removed in #89 (5f85852).
- Sweep dangling amalgamator lineage comments (build_one/buildone/expand/
  peek_package/peekpackage + stale combined.ww/combined intermediates)
  in cmd/ww/main.c + selfhost/cmd/ww/main.ww, symmetrically (rule-10),
  and the stale Makefile combined.ww test-comments (enumcap bigmod.unit.ww
  + 784/787/792/794/848 sep .s cmp + make-smoke sep self-compile).

Closes M4 and epic #22. all 445 pass; 990/993/994/995 byte-id HOLD;
sizelint clean.

a9778ec000 wcc,ww,os: atomic pkgcache store via temp+rename, both stages (#104)
The out/.pkgcache content-keyed store copied each artifact IN-PLACE
(cp -f / copyfile) to the fixed paths P.wwi/P.o/P.key. Key-last gave
crash-consistency but NOT concurrent-read safety: two same-stage builds
of a shared lib pkg (rt/time/os) target one out/.pkgcache/<pkg>/P.{wwi,o};
once an early finisher writes P.key, a later build's cache_lookup copies
P.wwi/P.o while a mid-finisher is still mid-write -> torn read -> corrupt
link / cs!=ww. The key is content-only, so it is purely the non-atomic
write.

Fix (Go-build-cache pattern, both stages in lock-step, rule 10): write
each artifact to a per-pid same-dir temp (P.wwi.tmp.<pid> etc.) then
rename() into place. Same dir => rename is atomic (cross-fs is not);
per-pid temp => concurrent writers don't clobber each other mid-copy;
content-keyed => last-writer-wins is byte-identical. Key renamed LAST so
a reader that sees the new key always finds complete artifacts. On any
mid-store error the per-pid temps are unlinked so a failed store leaves
no litter (cstage goto cleanup; wwstage cachermtmp helper).

  cstage cmd/ww/main.c cache_store: libc rename(2) + getpid().
  wwstage selfhost/cmd/ww/main.ww cachestore: new os.rename + cachetmp.
  lib/os/os.ww: add rename(2) (RENAME=82), ref/hare/os/os.ha:17 -- returns
    raw i32 errno like sibling remove/mkdir/rmdir (ww's os is the flat
    syscall floor, no fs:: layer); a second pathbuf2 slot holds newpath
    since kpath's single pathbuf can't carry both paths.

cache_lookup is unchanged: it reads cache->private scratch, and an atomic
source is never torn.

The torn-read race is closed BY CONSTRUCTION; a deterministic behavioral
regression-guard isn't feasible through the product build path (content-
keying => concurrent COLD builds all MISS+STORE, never HIT-read a mid-store
entry; a warm cache is never re-stored). The deferred white-box guard is
TASK #105. A WHY-comment at both fix sites records this.

Tests: 989_sepbuild_run KEEPS its private per-pid WW_PKGCACHE -- the
comment is corrected: the pin is NOT a torn-read mask (closed by
construction) but cold-compile isolation for the test's INTERMEDIATE
(.s/.unit.ww) byte-id compare, which a cache HIT legitimately skips
producing. The former 989_pkgcache_atomic_run is renamed to
989_pkgcache_concurrent_run and HONESTLY relabeled: it is a concurrent
shared-cache build-correctness smoke (N concurrent --sep builds sharing
one cache -> every binary byte-identical to an isolated reference + correct
run, both stages), NOT a torn-read/atomicity proof (a review revert-
experiment proved the original claim vacuous). Shrunk to 4 concurrent
builds x 1 batch x both stages. COLD/dev-only, off every byte-id/bootstrap
gate.

selfhost/cmd/ww/main.combined.ww remains stale (its writer was deleted at
the M4 E3-C1 flip; #90 deletes the file) -- not regenerated.

make test: all 445 passed; make sizelint clean; 990-997 byte-id hold.

33edc386f1 wcc,ww: flip driver to separate-compilation only; delete build_one amalgamator (M4 E3-C1, #22)
build_one_sep (per-package compile + .wwi interfaces + link) becomes the
sole build path. do_build/do_run/do_test and the ww twins all route
through it; --sep is now an accepted no-op and the run-rejects-sep guard
is removed.

Deleted the single-file amalgamator, both stages: build_one, expand,
expand_dir, peek_package (+ the wwstage twins + strictpkgmismatch).
unit_has_package is retained -- the sep scan loop's inline-package check
needs it. The sep-shared helpers (enumerate_dir_ww, locate_import*,
import_path_form, ImportSet, and ww counterparts) stay; they back the
surviving sep path.

Restores missing-package enforcement under sep by construction: the sep
scan loop loudly rejects an unresolvable import (cannot find package
<name>) unless the package is defined inline in the same unit -- matching
the deleted amalgamator and closing the silent-accept the flip would
otherwise introduce.

All 5 wwstage tools relink (each is built via the now-sep `ww build`);
emitted asm is byte-identical to the combined build per bootstrap input,
so the binary md5 delta is pure link layout, not codegen.

selfhost/cmd/ww/main.combined.ww is now stale and unregenerable (its
writer build_one is deleted); #90 deletes it next.

Test retargets folded in (rule-11 carve-out, #61/#133 precedent): each
asserts post-flip-only behavior, is un-pre-migratable unlike #93/#94/#103,
and splitting reddens one side. Closes #97.
- 989_slttypepref -> dir-package layout (xb imports xa so both same-leaf
  `invalid` types are in scope at xb.f); inline-multipackage was the
  amalgamator shape, deleted with the flip.
- 989_sepbuild_run -> run --sep now genuinely runs (exit 7), not the old
  loud-reject (exit 2); + a private per-pid WW_PKGCACHE so the cs/ww
  per-package byte-id compare on the shared real lib pkgs (rt/time/os) no
  longer races concurrent siblings on the global out/.pkgcache (the flip
  made sep the sole path, so every test now contends that cache).
- 737_direnum -> the deleted strictpkgmismatch "differs from" wording ->
  sep's "does not match import path" (shared substring, wwstage terser #68).
- 989_lib_byteid -> corpus-completeness scan excludes generated .sepwork
  scratch (the old `! -name '*.combined.ww'` exclude didn't cover the new
  sep artifact).

200f51ca94 ww: resolve self-named import to the dir-package, not a sibling file (M4 E3, #98)
The driver searchpath is srcd-first (srcd = the entry file's directory).
A co-located black-box test lib/<mod>/<mod>test.ww makes srcd=lib/<mod>,
so resolving `import <mod>` hit the sibling-FILE branch lib/<mod>/<mod>.ww
and folded it inline into the consumer unit under the wrong module tag
("package <mod> does not match import path <importer>") — 7 lib-run tests
fail under separate compilation. The combined amalgamator tolerated the
co-location; only sep surfaced it.

Resolve a package directory-first: walk ALL searchpath entries for a
directory match, and only fall back to a file match if no directory
exists anywhere. A dir-package now beats a same-named sibling file (fixes
the self-named shadow), while a leaf package with no directory (e.g.
lib/encoding/hex) still resolves via its file. This realizes the driver's
"a module is the directory" intent; the originally-specced per-directory
suppression was rejected because it broke leaf packages (rob-pike). Both
stages (cmd/ww/main.c + selfhost twin). The dir-beats-earlier-file
precedence change is latent and loud-failing (#101).

Move-set: ww + ww_ww (driver) only; w6c_ww/wwdump_ww/w6a_ww/w6l_ww HOLD.
Gate: test/wcc/989_coloimport_sep.c (table-driven, both stages).

37c253c367 wcc,ww: @test under separate compilation (M4 E1, #79)
Make `ww test --sep` work the Hare +test way: the -T synth test-main emits a
qualified test.run, and the test package is injected as an ordinary
separately-compiled dependency instead of splicing lib/test source into a
flat unit. Additive — combined stays the default and 910/997 are untouched
(their migration is M4 E2).

- compiler synth (both stages): the -T main emits N_DOT test.run plus a
  synthetic N_USE "test"; cmd/wcc/check.c + selfhost/cmd/wcc/check.ww.
- driver (both stages): build_one_sep gains is_test, injects the test package
  as a root dep, and passes -T to the root; do_test --sep routes a single-file
  test through the sep producer; cmd/ww/main.c + selfhost/cmd/ww/main.ww.
- 989_septest_run gate: ww test --sep on both stages, run-exit + cs==ww
  byte-id of the sep .s, non-vacuous.

The synth's test.run is left ty_err by the checker in both regimes (lib/test's
run is scope-keyed under "" not "test"; cgen emits the correct CALL via run's
//ww:module test directive) — wwstage tolerates it like cstage (rule-10). The
genuine fix, module-keying run under sep so the call type-resolves, is #80.

w6c_ww/wwdump_ww/ww_ww move (their embedded source changed); w6a_ww/w6l_ww and
the combined codegen output are unchanged.

2ff54c8bd4 wcc/ww: don't interface-check the sep-build root unit (BUG-1, #69)
The --sep producer compiled the ROOT build-target with the .wwi-producer
-I flag, so check_exported_type ran on the root and rejected a real-tool
root's legitimate `export fn f(a: *t)` over an unexported local type t
(the root is terminal — its interface is never imported, and its .wwi is
never consumed). The combined build never passes -I, so it built fine.
For pi==root, invoke w6c with -c -o only, no -I. Both stages (the wwstage
twin builds the shorter root argv). Gates that asserted __root.wwi exists
encoded the buggy behavior; updated to assert __root.s (the consumed
product) while deps' .wwi byte-id is retained.

M3-tail commit-6 prerequisite. Gate 989_seproot_export_run reproduces the
export-fn-over-unexported-type root + proves it sep-builds, with a
non-vacuity leg that the forced -I path still rejects.

747475174a wcc/ww: tag sep-built dotted-path packages by full path not leaf (#57)
A separately-compiled package's primary body was emitted under a bare
`//ww:module-reset`, so its own `package <leaf>;` clause set curmod to
the leaf (e.g. utf8) while the importer spliced the .wwi under the full
`//ww:module encoding.utf8` — definer mangled `utf8.X`, importer wanted
`encoding.utf8.X`, unresolved. Thread the dotted path through the
directive: `//ww:module-reset <path>` sets curmod to the dotted path
(imported stays 0, so the root `fn main` stays bare per #32), and the
body's package clause is demoted to a leaf==last-component assertion
instead of overwriting curmod. Aligns sep-build to the M1 path-mangle
model; only the SEP emitter changes (the combined build_one arm is
untouched, so all combined byte-id gates hold). Both stages mirrored.

Commit-6 broad-soak prerequisite. Gate 989_sepdotpath_run sep-builds a
2-level dotted package and proves definer==importer qualification +
single-component non-vacuity, cs==ww.

7b36f961a9 wcc/ww: out/.pkgcache content-keyed package cache for --sep (M3-tail c5b, #63)
Per-package build cache for `ww build --sep`: before recompiling a
package, recompute a plain-text key manifest (md5sum-hex lines of the
package sources, each direct dep's .wwi, the w6c and w6a binaries, plus
the compile flags) and reuse the cached .o/.wwi on a byte-for-byte key
hit. Both stages shell the same host md5sum (no ww-side md5) so the
non-compiler key lines are byte-identical cstage==wwstage; the compiler
md5 lines differ per stage BY DESIGN, giving each stage its own cache
namespace so a hit can never reuse the other stage's .o and mask a
cs!=ww codegen divergence. Cached outputs (.o/.wwi) stay byte-identical
across stages. Root package never cached; cache lives under $(OUT)
(gitignored, wiped by make clean). Both stages mirrored.

Dev-only convenience, off every bootstrap/byte-id gate. Gate
989_pkgcache_run (cold) proves miss-compiles / hit-skips-byte-id /
independent key-bust per input class with non-vacuity rehit.

62c7771594 wcc/ww: self-hosted deterministic ar-writer + archive dup-detect (M3-tail c5a, #62)
Per-package .a archives are written by a self-hosted deterministic ar
writer (zeroed mtime/uid/gid, fixed mode 100644, stable member order)
so cstage and wwstage emit byte-identical archives. The linker
force-loads the root .o positionally and pulls deps from .a; a
post-pull PASS-3 over unloaded members reports duplicate symbols
through the archive (#31). Both stages mirrored (cmd/ + selfhost/).

USER-ruled D2 (self-hosted ar writer); pike P1/P2 link model. Gate
989_separchive_run proves cs.a==ww.a byte-identity, 3x-determinism,

e37886b27d wcc/ww: ww build --sep separate-compilation driver (M3-tail c3, #46)
build_one_sep (both stages + ww/main.combined.ww regen): discover_deps
(transitive directory-package set, dotted-path identity), tri-color
reverse-topo (cycle bails; loud reject is commit 4), the transitive
producer loop (one w6c -c -I pass per package, dep-first, each both
consumer and producer of its .wwi), and a flat w6l of the .o set.
combined.ww stays the DEFAULT live path; --sep is additive.

Every dep is tagged by its full dotted import path on prepend
(//ww:module <path>), so the definer's qualified symbol (#53) == the
consumer's qualified reference (#40) and the sep .o set links. The
prepend is the TRANSITIVE closure (lead-ratified, superseding
rob-c3-spec §1.3 direct-deps): a dep's interface can name a transitive
dep's type (os exposes time.instant), so the consuming unit needs the
whole closure for resolution — direct-deps-only does not type-check.
Consistent with the current flat-unit transitive-namespace model (the
visibility tighten is #45, post-M4).

Gate 989_sepbuild_run drives ww + ww_ww --sep on the real chain
root->os->{rt,time}: build+run (exit 7) + cs==ww per-pkg .s/.wwi/.unit
+ final binary + transitive-topo discovery + keystone bodies==.wwi
(os,root) through the real driver. Cold scratch; -o-redirected.

f308818b4b wcc/ww: mangle imported symbols on dotted import path (#22 M1, #32)
Switch symbol mangling from the import leaf clause to the full dotted import path for directory packages; single-file imports keep package-clause mangling (isdir-gate: imported<=>directory-import). The root build unit's fn main stays bare, every other top-level decl mangles, closing #31's duplicate-main hazard by construction (#32). Both stages, byte-identical.

Single commit, not split: the bare rename (f244af3) is red on its own because it unmasks cross-module resolution gaps that do not reproduce pre-M1, so the fixes are intrinsic to making the rename correct. Included: wwstage fnret/fnparamslookupmod map import alias->path (#199b cross-module union-variant scrutinee resolved the wrong fn's union); cstage use_path prefers the referencing module's import for an ambiguous leaf alias (sha256 crypto.math vs strconv math). b9c4562135 ww test: @test name-filter via fnmatch (both stages)
`ww test <file> <pattern>` runs only the @test fns whose names match the
fnmatch glob; no pattern runs all (byte-for-byte the pre-filter path);
zero matches prints "No tests run" and exits 0 (Hare ground truth
ref/hare/test/+test.ha:114-117). A pattern in directory mode is rejected
"ww test: pattern needs a single test file" (rc 2), identical wording in
both twins (cmd/ww/main.c do_test + selfhost/cmd/ww/main.ww dotest).

Mechanism (a): rt/start.s stashes argc/argv into rt_argc/rt_argv getters
(rt_envp twin shape, -T synth untouched so 990-997 byte-id holds);
lib/os.args() rebuilds the []str view, build-once-cached; lib/test/run.ww
imports fnmatch and filters av[1..] (argv[0] is the binary path). The
driver forwards the 2nd positional as argv[1] via fork/execv (cstage) /
procrun (wwstage) so glob metachars aren't shell-expanded.

os.args() is the first `alloc`-caller in the base os module, so os.ww now
imports rt — the `alloc` builtin's malloc lowers to rt_malloc only when
the rt binding is bundled (mirror lib/strings/strings.ww:30); without it a
plain `ww build` of any os-importing program links bare libc `malloc`
(undefined). os is bundled by ~every program, so this is load-bearing.

The lib/test floor rises os-only -> os+fnmatch+ascii+strings in every -T
build; the bundled `ascii` module vs a `@test fn ascii` collision that
exposed is closed by the preceding #30 promote commit. 989_test_filter
pins the full matrix on both twins byte-identically; 949 gains the
dir-mode reject row. (#17)

2338ea5d59 ww: lib tests run via -T test mode; bare mains retired (closes @test conversion)
'ww test' gains the istest build path (-T injection in build_one/
buildone) and do_test/dotest accept -I, mirroring do_run - both twins.
The 35 converted lib tests drop their interim bare mains (-T
synthesizes the entry from @test fns and rejects a user main); their
35 C run-drivers flip 'ww run' -> 'ww test'; 989_lib_byteid compiles
lib tests under -T (8 user-main probe fixtures stay non-T, gated on
the fixture field). Abort-on-first-failure stands until the deferred
record-and-continue harness lands with the multi-package arc.

44c47c3ea0 ww: build intermediates follow -o output stem, not the source dir (test-perf T3a)
build_one/buildone gain an explicit objstem: 'ww build -o X' derives
main.{combined.ww,s,o} beside X; 'ww run' uses its per-pid /tmp stem;
default no--o stays next-to-source (load-bearing for the make regen of
tracked combined.ww and the freshness gate). Realizes the redirect TODO
in 995_self_rebuild.c. Kills the concurrent-test torn-read race on
selfhost/cmd/<tool>/main.* (the 991 transient). 993/995/949 pass -o
into their per-pid workdirs; 949's '-o /dev/null' relied on the old
driver ignoring -o (audited: the only live driver case). Atomic
combined write (os.rename) deferred to its own commit - lib/os lacks
rename and that addition is an import-floor regen.

4ff79bff0f ww: loud fatal on unresolvable import, inline-package aware (#16 ENFORCE-driver)
Both driver twins: an import that neither locates as a file nor is
satisfied by an inline 'package <name>' declaration in the unit is now
fatal "ww: cannot find package <name>" (was a silent skip that masked
dead imports and typos). The inline scan is a new every-line helper on
the uncapped comment-skip core - peekpackage stops at the first decl,
and single-file multi-package fixtures declare several. 949 pins both
branches (miss->fatal, inline->build+run); 993 adds ww_ww parity.

49a5173f3f wcc+ww: //ww:module-reset boundary directive; package-less files keep module "" (#16 PREP-main)
Driver twins emit the line-comment directive only before package-less
files (peekpackage==nil); both lexers tokenize it (TK_MODRESET, appended
=87 so existing token values hold) and both parsers reset curmod — a
package-less file's decls get module "" instead of inheriting the last
bundled package (the sticky-curmod leak, task #11). Withdrawn
alternative: injecting 'package main' flips non-entry symbols
bare->main-prefixed (FFI-visible, broke 764). Codegen-neutral by proof:
bare symbols preserved, both stages emit byte-identical asm for a
directive-bearing combined. Transitional until strict-package rejects
package-less files outright. Includes 737 bad-deep pin for the
PREP-peek >2048 edge + 904/toktest rows for the new token.

9e0816e199 cmd+selfhost+lib+test: directory-as-module enumeration in driver (#22)
Replace the cmd/ww + selfhost driver's file-walk import resolver
with true directory enumeration. `import encoding.utf8;` now finds
the lib/encoding/utf8/ directory and concatenates every *.ww file
in it (excluding *test.ww and the driver's *.combined.ww artifacts)
in byte-wise sorted order, instead of just finding the single
lib/encoding/utf8/utf8.ww file. Mirrors Hare's
hare/module/srcs.ha:183 _findsrcs minus tag handling.

Lookup order in both stages: (1) <dir>/<dot-as-slash>/ as directory
→ enumerate. (2) <dir>/<dot-as-slash>.ww as file. The legacy
<dir>/<name>/<name>.ww shape from #18's retained divergence is
dropped per rule-9 Hare-fidelity — Hare has no foo/foo.ha fallback;
a module IS the directory.

Symmetric across cstage (cmd/ww/main.c via opendir+qsort+stat) and
wwstage (selfhost/cmd/ww/main.ww via existing lib/os.getdents64 +
os.stat — no new lib/os surface needed; the rundirtests() walker
in main.ww from #18 was the model). Bootstrap ww2.s==ww3.s==ww4.s
byte-identical post-change.

Bundling justification (rule 11): strict-same-package validation is
bundled because the failure mode is dir-enum's own (a non-dir-enum
compilation unit cannot trigger mismatch across enumerated files).
The natural enforcement site is the driver — the parser can't
distinguish dir-enum concat from file-walk concat. Both stages
peek each file's first `package <name>;` line in expand_dir /
expanddir and exit(1) on mismatch with a precise error pointing
at the offending file. Hare's hare/module/srcs.ha:131 has the
same constraint via its README gate. Other half of #23 (strict
missing-package error tightening — 63 inline-source test wrappers
blocker) stays deferred per its filing.

Parser side (cmd/wcc/parse.c parseuse + lib/ww/parse/decl.ww
parseuse): n->str now carries only the LEAF identifier from a
dotted import. With the driver translating the full dotted path
to a directory walk, the checker only needs the package bareword
(last component) for the N_USE → decl disambiguation walk in
check.c's src_imports / decl_mod. Mirrors Hare's
`use encoding::utf8;` → `utf8::name` semantics
(ref/hare/hare/ast/import.ha:7).

Migration: lib/ww/sym.ww drops `import typ; import ast;`;
lib/ww/parse/parse.ww drops `import expr; import stmt; import
decl;`; lib/ww/lex/lex.ww drops `import tok;` — all sibling
imports auto-resolve via the new dir-enum when callers import the
package directory. lib/strings/, lib/encoding/utf8/utf8test.ww
migrate `import utf8;` → `import encoding.utf8;`. Makefile drops
-I lib/encoding/utf8 stopgap from wwdump_ww + w6c_ww. Seven test
wrappers (700_e2e, 966_strings_run, 970_fmt_run, 971_log_run,
972_fnmatch_run, 982_getopt_run, 990_selfhost) and 995_self_rebuild
drop the -I lib/encoding/utf8 runtime stopgap.

Tests: new 737_direnum C wrapper + test/wcc/data/direnum/ fixtures
pin (a) cross-pkg multi-file dir-enum build at runtime (both stages
must succeed) and (b) strict-same-package mismatch error (both
stages must surface "differs from" + exit non-zero). 738_module_decl
gains row 6 pinning the n_use->str leaf-only storage post-parser
change.

Retained workaround at selfhost/cmd/ww/main.ww expanddir loop:
`names[i][k]` nested-deref-then-index split into
`let nm: *u8 = names[i]; nm[k]` because wwstage cgen miscompiles
the chained form (treats inner u8 element as 8B sizeof *u8 instead
of 1B sizeof u8: extra MOVQ $8 + IMULQ on the inner index, MOVQ
instead of MOVZBQ load). Inline rule-8 WHY comment cites task #24
(wwstage cgen chained-index inner element size on **T). Two-step
form routes through the bare-pointer index path which both stages
handle byte-identically.

Class A wwstage cgen UNDER (chained-index inner element size on
**T) surfaced first time the codebase exercises the **T[i][k]
shape via enumeratedir() — corpus-coverage-blind landmine pattern,
same family as the trio (#27/#28/#31) from STATUS-5.

112/112 ok. ww2 == ww3 == ww4 byte-id holds.

79d9528a00 toolchain+lib+test: Go-style package/import keywords (#18)
User-mandated language redesign: source files declare their own
namespace via the new `package <name>;` keyword and pull dependencies
via `import <path>;`. Both keywords use Plan-9 `.` separator (user
override on Hare's `::` — `import encoding.utf8;`). Internal token-
kind enum values TK_MODULE=86 and TK_USE=17 kept stable for 990
wwdump byte-diff symmetry; only kwtab strings + tokname spellings
rotated. Executables (selfhost/cmd/{ww,w6c,w6a,w6l,wwdump}/main.ww)
declare `package main;` per Go convention; lib/ + selfhost/cmd/wcc/
files declare their parent-dir basename.

One-commit bundle per the brief's all-at-once directive: a per-stage
split breaks bootstrap byte-id mid-rewrite (cstage with new keyword
can't parse old `module`/`use` files and vice-versa). Body documents
the bundle per rule 11.

Two retained divergences from the user's stated ask, both filed per
rule 7 / rule 8 with inline task pointers at the deferred sites:

  Task #22 — Directory-as-module enumeration in the driver. User
  asked: "module is combination of files in directory" (golang/hare
  shape). After this commit lib/ww/{ast,sym,typ}.ww all declare
  `package ww;` but are still pulled into the compilation unit via
  explicit sibling `import` chains (sym.ww does `import ast;` etc.),
  not via dir enumeration. The cstage scaffold for true dir
  enumeration was drafted and reverted because the symmetric wwstage
  port requires a ww-side opendir/readdir wrapper around getdents64
  (~150-200 lines new ww). Inline citation at locate_import_in /
  locatein in both stages points to task #22.

  Task #23 — Parser strict missing-`package` error. The original
  brief mandated: parser errors when a .ww source omits `package
  <name>;` as its first non-comment item. Softened here to silent-
  default because 63 test wrappers (200_parse, 100_lex, 300_check,
  400_w6c, ..., the inline-source-fragment family) build ad-hoc ww
  source strings that lack `package` and the strict error cascaded
  into 60+ test failures. Migration is mechanical-sed but deferred
  so this commit ships green. Inline citation at parsefile in both
  stages points to task #23.

Node.module renamed to Node.nmod and modent.module to modent.nmod
in wwstage source — the field name `module` would collide with the
freshly-reserved TK_MODULE token. The rename is left in place as
clean separator between AST-field-name and reserved-keyword
namespaces. Cstage's n->module retained — C has no `package` or
`module` keyword.

rt/ensure.ww deliberately ships WITHOUT a package declaration so
its `export fn rt_ensure` keeps the bare linker symbol; adding
`package rt;` would mangle to `rt.rt_ensure` and break libwwrt.a
linkage. Documented at the file head.

111/111 ok (110 + new 738_module_decl sentinel). 995_self_rebuild
byte-id holds (ww2 == ww3 == ww4). All 5 frozen
selfhost/cmd/*/main.combined.ww regenerated under the new driver.
CLAUDE.md rule 5 amended with the language-layer divergence note.

2c33228b7e ww: rename toolchain to w-prefix + hare-style build/run/test driver
Plan 9-style w-prefix on the per-arch tools, disambiguating from the
real Plan 9 6c/6a/6l in ref/plan9front/:

    cmd/wwc/      → cmd/wcc/        libwwc.a → libwcc.a
    cmd/6{c,a,l}  → cmd/w6{c,a,l}   binary names too
    test/wwc/     → test/wcc/       6 test files w/ w6 prefix
    selfhost/cmd  mirror in lockstep
    bootstrap/amd64/{w6c,w6a,w6l}   snapshot binaries (gitignored)
    WW_6{C,A,L}   → WW_W6{C,A,L}    env-var overrides

Plan 9 source-tree refs ("Plan 9 6c shape", ref/plan9front/, etc.)
preserved. Hare-style driver, both C and ww sides:

    ww test [path] discover *_test.ww in a directory module, run
                     each; single-file mode for `ww test foo.ww`
    Module-by-name   `ww build foo` resolves to foo.ww or foo/foo.ww
                     via search path (cwd : -I dirs : $WW_LIB)
    Default-to-cwd   `ww build` / `ww test` build the cwd module
    Run pass-through `ww run path arg1 arg2` reaches the program

lib/os: getcwd (79) and getdents64 (217) syscalls power `.` resolution
and directory enumeration on the ww side.

Makefile: wwstage tool deps now include lib/os/os.ww (+ lib/strconv
for wwdump_ww) so lib/* edits force their rebuild instead of leaving
stale binaries — surfaced when test 995 first failed against a stale
w6c_ww built before the lib/os additions.

Test 993 byte-identical parity gate (C-side ww vs ww-side ww_ww on a
build corpus) stays green; all 19 tests pass.

ecf0a84127 6l: dynamic linking with symbol versioning
Teach the linker to consume ET_DYN shared objects and emit a
dynamically-linked ELF executable. Snake et al. can now link
against libncurses + libc through the system dynamic loader.

Pipeline additions:

- dyn.c: read ET_DYN, parse .dynsym + DT_SONAME, walk
  .gnu.version_d / .gnu.version to learn each export's default
  version (skip hidden entries).
- pass.c: when an undefined sym is provided by some Lso,
  promote it to dynamic, assign a PLT slot, record the
  matched version on the Lsym.
- dynout.c: emit PT_INTERP + PT_DYNAMIC, .dynsym/.dynstr/.hash,
  .plt + .got.plt + .rela.plt, .gnu.version + .gnu.version_r,
  and the full DT_* set with DT_BIND_NOW. Patch PC32/PLT32
  references against dyn syms to point at their PLT stubs.
- main.c: -L<dir> and -l<name> flag parsing; resolve <name>
  via .so / .so.<N> / .a in libdir order, skipping GNU ld
  linker scripts (libc.so on most distros).
- ww driver: collect -l/-L (joined and split forms) and pass
  through to 6l.

Design choices:

- DT_BIND_NOW so the loader resolves all PLT slots at startup;
  no PLT0 lazy resolver stub.
- SysV .hash, not .gnu.hash. One bucket; loader scans the
  chain. Slow at scale, fine for snake-class binaries.
- Non-PIE at fixed 0x400000.
- No section headers — loader uses program headers, but
  readelf -V/-S won't display anything.

Symbol versioning is the only correctness item beyond the
basic PLT/GOT machinery: glibc symbols default to versions
later than GLIBC_2.2.5 (e.g. clock_gettime → GLIBC_2.17 for
the vDSO impl), and the loader rejects unversioned references
to those without a matching Vernaux entry.

test/wwc/810_dyn covers four cases: bare libc dyn call,
multi-PLT, clock_gettime versioning, and fn-pointer to FFI
binding (which exercises the codegen fixes from the parent
commit alongside the new linker path).
